Peace

When composing an image, it is important to start the composition with the desired mood in mind that you want to convey to the viewer. Mood can be conveyed through not only the choice of subject but also control of light and shadows, focal length, framing, and shutter speed. The use of shutter speed on a moving subject such as waves or waterfalls can convey a very powerful scene if a fast shutter freezes the water in motion and can be very peaceful if a slow shutter is used. In this image of the waterfall and pond I attempted to create a very peaceful mood by minimizing distractions shooting close in, allowing the light to highlight the grasses while deepening the shadows around to further create an intimate scene. Finally, the water over the falls and into the pond itself is stretched and allowed to become milky white with a long shutter. This image was actually taken on a rainy day which also softened the overall light, further bringing a sense of peace to the final composition.

In order to find true peace in life it is necessary to take some time to slow down, focus on the important things, and allow God to guide our lives in intimate fellowship. Psalm 23:1-5… “The Lord is my Shepherd…” I know the One who leads me. “I shall not want…” I trust Him to provide for me. “He makes me lie down in green pastures…” The Lord will give me rest. “He leads me beside quiet waters…” Thirst-quenching, life-giving water but not turbulent and loud but peaceful. “He restores my soul…” Restoration implies not only rest but rejuvenation to be able to continue my journey. “He guides me in paths of righteousness…” He already knows the perfect and safest path. “For His name’s sake…” God does all of this for His own glory and all He asks of us is to trust Him and follow where He leads us.

I hope that this peaceful image that I have shared today helps you slow down and take a breath amidst your own sometimes chaotic world. Next time you have an opportunity, slow down and take a walk beside that stream or waterfall and thank God for His leading and the peace that He offers.
