LAND
Capturing the land begins with taking the time to take in and appreciate the interplay of the of light and shadow as it falls on the hills, valleys, cracks and crags that one may find all over this place we call earth. Some places remain shaped purely by the Creator without intervention and others may have had human involvement, but the drama and the story of the land usually lies in its stillness.
Cherry blossoms at the University of Washington. What a beautiful place on an April morning!
Fresh blooms on the UW Cherry Blossom trees. If you have never been to the University in early April you need to visit!
One more shot of the magnificent UW blossoms. Winter in Seattle may be dreary but it's all worth it when Spring bursts out!
I have a growing collection of this magnificent volcano but if you live in the Puget Sound you understand...
Caught this beautiful little sunstar coming around the tree on a cold morning at Lake Tapps Washington.
Cloud capped Mt. Rainier with a hot air balloon floating nearby. What a wonderful morning!
Mt. Rainier, Washington. There is always something special about seeing the beautiful Cascades welcoming me home when flying in from various travels. Always a reminder of God's goodness and the comfort of a familiar place.
Sunset at a local pond with light being captured in wildflowers. I enjoy how despite these flowers not being spectacular the light makes them beautiful.
This image was taken while on a drive searching for a different image of a local waterfall. Sometimes you take what you find rather than what you were hoping to find.
Washington Park Arboretum, Seattle. If you have never visited this special place in the Fall, you are missing out!
Point Defiance Park, Washington. I love the way the Fall afternoon light is streaming through these well placed trees clinging to the steep hillside.
Hoh Rainforest trail in the Fall... the dappled light and the fallen leaves of this winding trail through what is sometimes pin drop quiet forest is hard to portray unless you have walked the path. I hope this image captures a bit of that quiet.
Olympus Ranger Station nestled deep in the heart of the Hoh Rainforest.
Dappled morning sunlight filtered through this moss covered tree near our camp at Lewis Meadow creating a scene where a hobbit might feel at home.
Came across this beautifully colored flower on a September day and thought it should be captured.
Evening walk around Weyerhaueser Pond. I love the incredible detail this photo captured and the soft glow of the flowers in the evening light.
Beautiful snow capped Mt. Si. This spectacular peak graces the skyline of the nearby town of North Bend, Washington, gateway to Snoqualmie Pass in the Cascade Mountain Range.
Majestic Mt. Rainier in the setting sun. This 14,411 ft. sentinel stands guard over the Puget Sound region. A massive monolith of epic proportions over 100 miles circumference rising from a landscape of a sea level inland sea to give it a striking height for those living in it's shadow. "The Mountain is out!" is how those of us in the region instantly describe a beautiful day.
Chambers Bay, University Place Washington. This amazing golf course was created from the largest gravel mine in the United States and has been transformed into a challenging and beautiful playground of light and shadow that is a golfers and photographers dreamscape.
Another shot of Chambers Bay (click for larger view) showing the full course. The evening sun on the dunes of this course is a photographers dreamscape.
Eagle Cap Mountain, Wallowa Oregon. I love the contemplative serenity of a friend taking in the vast landscape of the Wallowa Mountains from 9577' Eagle Cap peak. This is one of my favorite places on earth to escape the frenzy of the city even if for only a few days.
Lostine River Valley, Wallowa Oregon. Another shot from the top of Eagle Cap Peak looking down the Lostine Valley toward the Two Pan trailhead some ten miles back down the valley.
Hiking through the burn. Three Sisters Wilderness a couple of seasons after a major fire destroyed the area. A memorable pack trip to the Golden Lake Meadow with several teen kids on their first pack trip.
The 17 mile trail along the Pacific Coast in Olympic National Park is an adventure like nothing else as it mixes equal parts beach hikes with treks through the rainforest. I love the feeling that this almost retro looking image portrays of my backpacking partners making their way along the beach on this route.
