Beauty
Over the years I have spent quite a bit of time in my mind pondering the question of, “what is beauty?” Why is one thing or person more attractive than another? Whether it is a photo, a painting, a musical composition, a person, or something in nature there are certain elements that must be common that make them beautiful. I have come to the conclusion that one of the things that we crave as humans is order and not chaos. Music that is not played in harmony or in proper timing is chaotic to our ears and unpleasant. A photo or painting that has elements of symmetry, complimentary colors, and leading lines to create depth takes the eyes on an enjoyable journey through the image and that is perceived in our minds as beautiful and enjoyable. An attractive person usually is blessed with symmetry in their face and good proportions in their body.
The photo I have included in this post today was chosen because it is not only calming with a long exposure on the water, but the leading line of the bridge takes the viewers eyes on a journey into the photo. There is depth created by the bridge and the colors of the sky and the water are complimenting with interesting reflections of color under the bridge. Ultimately, the image is pleasant because it is orderly and makes sense to the eyes.
Where does this innate desire for “orderliness” and therefore a perception of beauty come from? It is my belief that scripture shows us that God is a God of order and not chaos. Starting with the first chapter of Genesis we see God creating order out of chaos. Isaiah 61:3 shows us a God that is able to bring “beauty from ashes.” There are so many more verses that demonstrate that God is a God of order and I believe he has instilled us with this natural desire.
Finally, reading Philippians 4:8 reminds us that “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” God wants us to dwell on things of truth and not lies, beauty and not chaos, and to dwell on that which is worthy… ultimately that should lead us to dwell primarily on the very author of order and beauty, God Himself.
Take some time out today to ponder something beautiful around you and while you are taking that time to appreciate the beauty take the time to appreciate the One who is the original Creator of beauty and be thankful.
