Reflections
“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.” (2 Cor. 3:18)
Reflections
I love the way that the use of reflections in photography can produce such a calming and serene effect. I believe that the colors and shapes that are being cast on the water are interesting and pleasing to the eye because we are hardwired as humans to appreciate what is orderly. The calmer the water the more the reflected image becomes difficult to differentiate from the objects creating the reflection. Some are so perfect that you could turn the image upside down and not be able to tell the difference. In this image the choice to compose it with very similar tree shapes on the right and left along with the sky and water being equal in size further emphasizes the overall symmetry in the image. Composing and editing an image purposefully to create the desired impact is an important skill to work on if you have a desire to go beyond snapshots in photography.
In His Image
Genesis 1:27 tells us that we are created in God’s image. This has an implication that we are to be like Him and a reflection of His glory. As humans we will never be a perfect reflection of course and the fact that we are fallen has made this even more difficult. This is where 2 Corinthians 3:18 comes in to give us hope that through Christ we are able to be transformed into His image as in a mirror. Notice the word “being” in this verse that implies that this is a process and not a final destination. We all have much work to be done in this, but the blessing is that the work is being done by the Spirit of Christ and is not dependent on us!
Image Quality
Back to the reflection in the lake. As I contemplated this image and the quality of the reflection, God brought to my mind that the quality of the reflection depends on the quietness of the water. If there are external factors such as wind or boats the water will be stirred up and chaotic. It will no longer show a clear image of the things that are reflecting upon the water, and it will not be as beautiful to look at.
What about seeking stillness in life? Psalm 46:10 tells us to “be still and know that I am God.” 1 Thessalonians 4:11 admonishes to “live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands”. When we are too busy and distracted or allowing external circumstances to create chaos in our minds, we will lose focus and the reflected image of Christ in our life may become obscured. Take some time to reflect on what might be stirring up the waters of your life and ask Him for guidance on how to remove the disturbance or give you calm even in the middle of the chaos (Isaiah 26:3).
On the lake of life there will always be storms threatening to disturb our reflection of Christ. It is only by faith and trust in Him that we can find the serenity to reflect Him clearly. It is my hope that these thoughts today will help you and bless you in your journey.
