Perspective

In photography sometimes in order to make ordinary things more beautiful all that needs to be done is to change your perspective on the subject. Get down lower and shoot upward or get higher and shoot down toward the subject. Our eyes are accustomed to looking straight on at eye level to take in the world around us so getting out of the “normal” can make a difference in the photo. This shot was taken on an ordinary day enjoying the Seattle Waterfront with my family. It is an ordinary and well known subject probably shot by thousands of people each day. The light is not particularly great being in the middle of the day and with so many people and other distractors around I needed to find a way to isolate the ferris wheel so I decided to get very close and shoot straight up. It’s not a photo that will win any awards or is particularly noteworthy but I thought I would share it today as an example of the change of perspective having a positive effect.

What about perspectives in life? When life seems very ordinary and dull or we are in a difficult period maybe the perspective of time or finding a way to view the circumstance from a different angle can change how we are seeing that circumstance. The apostle Paul in Philippians wrote that “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13). What makes this powerful is actually the verse before where he was essentially speaking of his perspective of finding contentment whether “being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.” (Phil. 4:12)

Whether taking a photograph of a bit of life or living life remember today to take the time to adjust your perspective slightly. It might make a difference in how you see things!
