One important aspect of photography is to find something in the image that anchors the overall composition. This gives the viewers eyes a starting point as they move their eyes through the photo. This anchoring subject is often in the foreground of the image as today’s photo from the island of Kauai shows with the prominent rocks that anchor the foreground. These rocks are balanced by the trees along either side of the photo which also serve as a framing to take the viewer on an imaginative journey out to the tropical beach beyond. The cool blue water gives a sense of peaceful calm as it flows gently around the rocks toward the beach.

I see the anchoring rocks in the image serving the purpose not only of a starting point but also a guide to the eyes through the photo to begin at that point, circle around and then return to the base once again to complete the journey. Depth, purpose, direction. This is the result of setting up the photo with purposeful elements to anchor and direct the eye. This helps the image to make sense and to have order rather than chaos and this results in a perception of beauty.

Where is your life anchored? Rather, in whom is your life anchored? Deuteronomy 32:4 is one of numerous verses in the bible that describes the Lord as the Rock. “The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He.” Perfect… faithful… just. A solid anchor in the storms of life that gives us a starting point, an ending point, and direction to walk in peace through life. The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:4 refers to the rock as well and informs us that this rock is Christ.

A life with depth, purpose, direction and ultimately peace must be anchored in the rock of Jesus Christ. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end and our true foundation (Revelation 22:13 and 1 Corinthians 3:11). No matter what life brings, cling to Him!
